Chapter 27: What we will do
“What is your friend talking about, mother?” Sesshomaru asked, his mind racing to understand the words and their meaning. Kagome was his mate? But how was that possible? He had been told his own life that a human could never be the mate of a demon and yet the Lord Hotaka had seemed quite certain that Kagome was his mate.
He was shocked by how much he desired the other lord’s words to be true. He had never felt such a desire for his last mate, Sakura; he had just been resigned to that mating.
He thought of when he had first seen Kagome in his rooms and what a vision she had been to him and how her natural scent was still an intoxication to him. Sakura had never been such to him, she had always been a task or duty meant simply to continue his line and yet, it was the woman that he was coming to realize that he had always wanted that would do that great duty of giving birth to his children.
“I would think that is would be simple to see, Sesshomaru.” His mother said as she struggled to stand, he was instantly on guard and held his little girl closer to him. He would kill his mother without another thought if she thought to be a threat to his child.
“It is not, so explain or I will give you a swift end.” Sesshomaru growled.
“Tell me, my son…would you die for Kagome?Would you die for her happiness and safety?” He looked at his mother, confused by her questions and knew that he would do so happily for Kagome and their children. They were his world and his life, if they did not exist that his continued existence would be meaningless.
“Of course, she is everything.” He answered immediately.
“We demons are odd things. We know our mate, the moment we meet but it takes a great deal of time before we realize what we feel for that other person. Sometimes, the male will even try to kill his female though this is likely to see if she’s strong enough to breed with him well. But they fall in love and realize on their own that they are mates…or that’s how it had been in the past.”
“What do you mean?” he found himself intrigued by what he was being told for he had never heard of it before.
There are so few females of power now that we almost seem like a dying breed upon the ruling class. It’s no longer about love and more about breeding children to carry on our bloodlines…it’s been like this since the jewel of four souls was created and the plague of infertility posioned us all.” Sesshomaru glanced down at the baby is his arms, he had know about how few girls were being born and how they were more precious than any son could ever been now.
It only made him see how luck he was to have his children and Kagome. For he now understood what Kagome truly was to him.
He loved her.
OOo
Kagome lied down, feeling that she needed to rest a little more after the long birth she had just went through when Sesshomaru walked in with a bundle in his arms that was whimpering. The sight of it had her sitting up but Sesshomaru moved quickly to her side and made her lie back down. “You need to rest, Kagome.”
She saw the bundle was a baby with silver hair and blue eyes like Mizuki with the only difference being that the baby had ears like Inuyasha. Her arms ached to hold what was clearly her child. Sesshomaru only gave her the baby once she was lying down, she immediately bared a breast and the baby was all too eager to suckle from her.
“What happened?” she asked without looking away from their child.
“I had noticed the ears and feared that Yumi would not survive long. So I took her away to both save her life and hide her away for a time.” He informed her, causing her to look at him and hold their baby all the closer to her.
“You were going to keep her from me?” she felt numb at the thought of him keeping the child in her arms hidden from her. She had always thought that she could trust him with their children since she had awoke that first time to see Sesshomaru holding Mizuki in a loving fatherly way. But now she feared that her trust had been misplaced and if he could truly be trusted at all.
“…She is in danger, Kagome. If the other lords were to learn of her and that she is a half demon like my brother then they would demand her deat-”
“I’ll kill anyone that threaten our children, you included Sesshomaru.” Kagome interrupted in a growl. She would kill anyone and have no regrets for it, even if it meant burning in the flames of hell for all eternity. Her children were worth any price.
Sesshomaru looked at her before reaching out to gently touch the head of their daughter. “I know…and I would want you to kill me if I ever become a threat to our family. But the lords want to use you as well and will send their armies to gain you and we already have a threat within our palace that we must take care of first.”
Kagome looked at their other children, only imaging what would happen if the other lords were somehow able to kill Sesshomaru and take her away from their children. She had a feeling that their daughters would used endlessly and their sons would be killed without another thought. This time wasn’t safe for their babies and they needed to take them away to a time and place that was.
Staring at their children, she wondered if it would be wise to tell Sesshomaru about the well and her time. Looking down at the little girl in her arms, she thought of the name that Sesshomaru had given to their daughter. She had wanted to name one of their daughters after her mother and felt that it hadn’t right with the others unlike the little girl in her arms. “Why did you name her Yumi?”
“Because she is different and beautiful like a dream…it seemed only fitting to give her her grandmother’s name.” Kagome looked at Sesshomaru and suddenly felt tears come to her eyes. She felt so tired and so unsure, they needed to protect their children but it felt as if they had no allies at their side.
Leaned against Sesshomaru and let the tears fall, needing to feeling his strength for a moment before them did anything. She whispered, “What do we do now?”
oOo
Sesshomaru stroked her hair, wishing that he had all the answers, but he did not. They had one ally and a few possible others but were otherwise surrounded by enemies that would kill their sons and breed Kagome to death until their daughters came of age to breed in her place. “We take things a few steps at time until we no longer have enemies that will be a threat to our family.”
Despite the danger around them, Sesshomaru felt content for the moment. Kagome had never truly leaned on him, needing his strength to help her recover from the exhaustion that she was no doubt feeling both physically, mentally and emotionally. But he doubt that all if it was just from the birth that she had just endured a few short hours ago. He had done so much to her and he wondered if it was truly right when he thought of how Kagome had acted so differently from the other women.
Human women would have been horrified but adjusted with time and demoness’s like his mother would have just accepted it, but Kagome forever showed him the fire that burned within her, her will defying him always if she did not agree.
It was probably one of the things that he found most beautiful about her. But then he found everything about her beautiful.
“That’s not a guarantee for their survival, though.” He heard her whisper and it hurt for he knew that she was right. At the moment they had not guarantee that their children would survive the battles to come but he would die first before allowed even one of them or Kagome to be harmed.
“I want to go with you to the battlef-”
“You can’t.” Sesshomaru interrupted harshly. He knew that she was a strong warrior and powerful ally but his mother could no longer be trusted and he needed someone to be there that could always protect their children from the dangers that may try to invade their home while he was gone.
Kagome pushed away from him and glared at him, looking again powerful and strong even as she nursed their child upon her breast. “I can’t? You know I’m not weak, Sesshomaru. I can kill hundreds of demons with my arrows and I wi-”
“My mother seeks to kill Yumi.” He interrupted, hating how true the words were and that they had the power to hurt him. He had always believed that he could trust his mother with their children but it was no longer a possibility.
The hard look in Kagome’s eyes took him that she was going to do something reckless like his brother would do. “She’s quite the hunger little thing.”
Sesshomaru was surprised when Kagome had suddenly said that and which breasts so Yumi may continue to nurse. He looked at their half demon daughter and gently touched an ear. It flickered at his touch but their little girl just continued to nurse from her mother. “Your mother said you and the oldest boy are the same with how you both eat a lot…I guess Yumi will be taking after you and her big brother.”
Looking at the others, he noticed that he had another daughter and two more sons…it was hard to believe that he was a father to six healthy newborns and an almost year old daughter.
He moved to pick up one of his new sons and aired in the scent of the newborn. He had created with this little life with Kagome and he hoped that he would see it grow up. “Have you named any of them?”
“I named our oldest boy after my grandfather…it just seemed right.” She answered him. He looked back at her and saw a look of indecision upon her face. “What are you thinking, Kagome?”
“I may know of a place to hide them if we have to.” She said as she looked at their children.
“Where is this place?”
“My family’s home.”
